So, as some of you may know, I study with Yakov Gubanov who was one of Shostakovich's last students. The more astute (or obsessed) of you will know that Shostakovich is one of my heros. Well, today Yakov told a story about how when he was at conservatory in Russia one of his professors, whose name is too long to be recounted and thus was ( Read more... )

He could, quite possibly, be my favorite professor at Berklee.

I get to meet up with him on Tuesday to talk about MORE Shostakovich than usual for a week :)

That is probably the first livejournal entry I have ever read by anyone that was ACTUALLY interesting. Ah, Shostakovich - so much great music. Have to say though that I am not a massive fan of the preludes and fugues even though I love the majority of his music. That story was very interesting.

Thank you. I appreciate the comment. You've tapped into one of the reasons why I never post.

I was not taken by the Preludes and Fugues at first either but they have grown on me immensely. If only I had the recordings of Sviatoslav Richter playing them although there are some he never recorded.

Did you get my email about the sonata?

Ahh, yeah, I did see that pic. Debbie sent it to me. I think I look terrible in it.

What a fantastic story to read.

Thanks for posting that!

Ah, Berklee, object of my obsession. If only a semester's tuition wasn't the financial equivalent of three (or more) years of study here in Canada. *le sigh* One of these days I'll make it down to Boston and just check out the campus, if nothing else.

Berklee has a campus? :)

I would've made money had I gone to Mizzou as my scholarships exceeded the costs. As the saying goes though, you couldn't pay me to live in Missouri.
