Biography: Kyuhyun's history is unremarkable. His parents have always been loving and supportive of his endeavors, and never attempted to pressure him into a certain occupation. If Kyuhyun's father wanted him to follow in his footsteps and earn a business degree, he never spoke of it. However, that may be because his older sister had already gone to Europe to finish her MBA by the time he applied to Yonsei. Either way, Kyuhyun was free to do as he wished.
As a child his parents were stricter, but in ways meant to foster his potential. It was easy for Kyuhyun to recognize that, later on. After years of lessons after school, he can still play piano and clarinet, even though his instruments often sit unused now. It turns out fingers don't readily forget what they learned so well.
In school, Kyuhyun focused on his grades and never made much attempt to socialize, since it wasn't easy for him to be talkative. He didn't mind only having a couple of friends, and was more than happy to read in the library or play games in the computer lab while other students would hang around together in the hallways. Meeting Changmin started to change that. As their friendship grew, Kyuhyun became more willing to engage others in small talk, and to try to seem a little less like an automaton.
He picked up fencing halfway through high school in order to avoid the drudgery of forced P.E. classes, and learned two things: fencing is not as easy as it looks, but it is as fun as it looks. Before long, he had a full set of gear, upgraded from foil to sabre, and made sure to check that the university he chose had a good team. And after much waffling about the STEM field majors, he chose engineering physics so that he could specialize in one of the myriad of interesting fields related to it later. He still hasn't made up his mind about which of those he'd prefer.
The rest of his extracurricular activities are all thanks to Changmin's convincing. After their year abroad making robots, they'd chosen a university and Kyuhyun was largely content to keep to himself the rest of the time, but Changmin reminded him of how much better his transcript would look if he joined a fraternity and just one club. In the face of such a logical observation, Kyuhyun caved. And really, it was worth it. While he's still not really sociable, he appreciates the company of his brothers, and he can always shut himself up in his room and take out a game/robot kit/book whenever he'd prefer solitude instead.
Personality: Kyuhyun can be difficult to read, because his nonverbal communication is rather subtle. Because of this, he prefers for others to be straightforward with him. In turn, Kyuhyun himself can be straightforward to the point of bluntness. He's also quite reserved, and hesitant to share details of his life that he considers personal. Kyuhyun is much more forthright about his opinions and ideals than what might have happened to him on any given day.
He can seem cold, and can especially look it when he's not smiling. Kyuhyun's taken this attribute in stride, and has used it to cultivate a sarcastic sense of humor, with deadpan delivery. He does keep up walls when he meets people though, and needs time to get to know and trust them before his walls begin to lower. Once he's made a friend, Kyuhyun will usually be more open and talk more easily. He's still a bit shy around women in-person, though.
Kyuhyun prizes actions that match words, and aims for that himself. But he can be a bit hypocritical in social settings, because he would rather let other people approach him for conversation than try to talk to someone new himself. (He justifies it in his mind by remembering that most people are better at it than he is.) He's still introverted enough to need the occasional time for himself, and particularly prefers quiet, uncrowded areas, but he's become comfortable enough with people to enjoy the occasional small party. If someone insists he attend a larger party, Kyuhyun will do his best to arrive early or late, when the party's not booming, grab a drink, and try to find someone he can count on for good conversation.
In school, his commitment to the work depends entirely on the subject. Kyuhyun will pour all his energy into a good math problem, and shirk things like the obligatory visual arts credit as much as possible. He doesn't have much patience for repetitive work, even in the subjects he's strongest at, unless it offers him a new perspective, like a new way to solve a problem. And labs are the most fun if he gets to create something in the process of doing the required work.
