Just an apologetic note to unregistered readers of this journal, not that you will be able to say anything back as soon as I post ( Read more... )

Yep, when I changed the thing to "friends only" there was no spam. I always wanted the journal to be a completely hospitable place, though, so it's aggravating that its open door has to be shut, even locked. Grrr.

How very annoying. I've had a few spam messages but blocking the accounts that sent them has, so far, been effective.
If you decide to go "friends only", I would really appreciate being added to your f-list (you are on mine; perhaps that's enough?) Before I took an LJ account myself, I discovered your Frodo posts, which I all read A-Z and enjoyed very much.

Yes, Ambree, that's enough. As to blocking the accounts, I do that, but new ones pop up, like the skeleton warrior's out of the dead dragon's teeth in Jason and the Argonauts. :)

Mechtild, have you tried just turning off anonymous commenting rather than making your journal friends only? This is what I did when I was being driven mad with spam and I haven't had one since, not even from a 'registered LJ user'.

Yes, that works. I have several friends who have done that. My LJ has been friends only almost the entire time I've had it. I do occasional public posts, but not many.

That's the first thing I did. I was sorry to do it because I had at least one regular reader who had never registered on LJ and would no longer be able to comment. I told her in a reply before I did it -- turn off the anonymous comment function -- so she wouldn't be puzzled or feel offended.

That was very nice of you. A few people have unfriended me over the years and I never knew why. And I've always sent a PM to anyone I felt the need to unfriend. It's the decent think to do, IMO.

You should tell that person to get a Live Journal. *g*

That's awful. I haven't had the "pleasure" of such posts.

Even though my journal isn't officially friends locked, most of my posts are friends only because they're mostly about my family. Perhaps that's why I've not had this problem?

A couple of times in the past I've been friended by complete strangers (usually of Russian origin). Then, perhaps as I don't post so often, they would then unfriend me...

I think so.

My very first spam comment was in a language I didn't know, looked like Polish. But eventually I figured the comments were spam as they had links in them. Later I got Russian spam too. If they have a pile of links, I always assume they're spam since the English language ones do. They're always trying to promote porn (this is the majority) or drugs for erectile dysfunction or designer handbags and things like that

Mech,
I've had to do the same thing with The Fashion Police Files unfortunately - the spam was getting completely ridiculous, sometimes up to thirty comments every day, in various random old posts - since then, I have had none at all, so it's worked !! As I understand it, if you set your journal commenting access to friends only, but keep your journal posts public, the public can still see your posts but they just can't comment.

Yes, exactly - they're almost all in random old posts -- as if anyone would see their stinking spam comments anyway! Seems like a pointless project to me.

I will make sure I'm doing what you said - restricting only the permission to comment.
