EW Screencaps, Ridiculous Thoughts, 'Alternate Take' ~ Part Five
“Ridiculous Thoughts~Alternate Take,” Part Five....
I thought I was finished with this project when I got a Private Message at K-D from Shelbyshire:
"Did you know there is another version of "Ridiculous Thoughts" on the Cranberries' STAR DVD," she asked.
No, I did not!
Well, she said, there was. And, it had even more Elijah Wood material on it than the "regular" one from the main playlist. Might I want to take a look at it?
Would I????
That's what I get for not watching the whole DVD! It turns out that there are "alternate takes" of many songs and "Ridiculous Thoughts" is one of them. These can only be found by selecting "Extra Features" in the opening menu -- which I had not done.

So. I watched this other version, and, immediately, I saw that I could have done my primary capping from this version, instead. EW not only has more footage, it appears in larger, more sustained sequences.
It has most but not all of the footage included in the "regular" version, some of it closer up and from slightly different angles. Woo hoo! (The version on the main play list does have EW footage not included in the "alternate" version, so I still needed to cap both.)
What is great about the alternate take is that it sets up the young man right from the beginning as the POV for the viewer's journey through the song. EW even has a couple of spoken lines before the song starts. He is slumped against the wall, smacking his headset against his palm, complaining, "God, I can't hear it! I can't hear it!" So, the idea really is that he is unable to hear the music. After he speaks his lines, the eerie "siren call" of the song's opening is heard. The face of the singer is intercut with shots of the young man, looking around, listening, looking for the music's source. It works very well, much better than the main version, in my opinion.
The video as a whole is quite different in the alternate version. In the main version, the band is shown performing on stage whenever the young man is not shown. In the alternate version, they are photographed as actors might be, in costume, often against carnival settings. The effect is more theatrical, surreal, even haunting.
I much preferred the alternate to the final version. I even got to like the song this time around. For any of you who might like to hear this song, here is a link to a site that hosts Cranberries songs for downloading (MP3 SUGAR.COM):

Below is the first of three more sets of screencaps. As you will see, some frames are only slightly different from caps I've already posted in Parts I - IV, but I liked the "alternate" versions of them so well, I had to post them. This set includes a lot more of the lemony-tinted "angsty" material. Some of it is very good indeed!
