"Community & Family Medicine" projects. Please, I have enough to learn about diagnosing and treating diseases and sifting through patient stories without having to worry about filing out a super detailed family history of a random patient, making a 40 slide powerpoint presentation on community resources and disease patterns (yeah, there are a lot ( Read more... )

Hmm, nope, I'm pretty sure that's rampant in all medical schools.

But cheer up. Nursing students get to do it for FOUR YEARS. No wonder they end up so bitter!

Yeah, you're probably right about it being all schools. However, my preceptor (who takes students from all 4 schools in the state) did say that it seemed as though the students from my school have more random projects...

Aaah! We had that too for family med (which I just finished) We had to do:
1 full H&P
1 nutritional assessment
2 SOAP notes
2 geriatric assessments (one inpatient and one outpatient)
1 psychosocial project, complete with patient's family tree
6 journal entry (one for each week, including the last week when we had the OSCE on thursday and the shelf on friday. it's not bad enough that I have to study for that crap, I also have to be introspective?)
...and we had required reading and a quiz every week.

(I pretty much made up patients for everything. I mean, how many 85year olds do you know who know if their vaccinations are up to date?)

Good luck on your shelf! I just took it yesterday.

Yeah, I left out the SOAP notes and assessments because I figured those were at least tangentially related to the actual practice of medicine. But the community health stuff...

That all med schools are so alike that they make us do such similar useless bull F~(K!N& $#!+. At least we aren't alone as we try to discuss the finer points of how patients with SEVERE CP and MR feel about not being able to enjoy fulfilling sex lives. (In case you are a pre-med and new to this list yes they actually have lectures on how patients with severe mental retardation and cerebral palsy feel about their sex lives. When we could actually be learning about the 15 disease states that I forgot today much less yesterday or tomorrow. If this does not sound like fun to you get out NOW!)
