CHARACTER NAME: River Tam
SERIES:
Firefly wikia
CANON POINT: Post Serenity
AGE: Eighteen
APPEARANCE:
Summer Glau as River
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: n/a
PERSONALITY:
River is suffering from what her brother says is paranoid schizophrenia. This means there is really two sides to River, possibly three. There is the alert River, the one who is going through her mania, and the River who is the weapon. The first two are very similiar since they involve the very nature of who she is. The last was forced on her, a switch that gets turned on and skills unleashed that she didn't even know were possible.
River is a caring young woman who is dealing with things no one should ever deal with. We see her light and playful, watching the crew play their version of basketball. She jokes and runs with Kaylee and teases her brother and Mal. She's just a teenage girl who wants to be a teenage girl. She's calm, and even Mal says he finds her pleasant enough.
But then there is a whole other side to her. One that has been utterly broken by the doctors. She has always been exceptionally brilliant, but her mania sends it through cycles. She rambles, nothing makes sense, and she starts talking in almost code, words making graphic images of the horror that's in her head. Especially when she starts remembering Miranda, a planet that the Alliance tried to terra form and everyone died. River saw and felt each one of their deaths. This was the cause of the Reavers, zombie like creatures who only kill and destroy.
She is a genius though, even without her abilities to see into people's minds. When a bounty hunter, a very skiled and very cruel man, comes after her, she tricks him by first making him think he was going mad. Then she got him to believe she was leaving with him. River can be very cunning like that.
But she's not altogether there. When put in great danger after a heist, her brother asks her how she is, and her only answer is that she swallowed a bug. This was after being chased by Reavers. It does show a light side to her though. In one of her episodes, from her point of view, we just see a confused girl staring at a twig. But what is going on in reality is that she's holding a gun.
It speaks to her rationalization. River says that an object is just an object. She's can't comprehend, and she tells Mal this. It isn't that she doesn't know. She just doesn't connect things as readily as she once did. It's like a lot of peices, but she can't see the full picture.
And then if you add in her abilities, it compounds things even worse. She knows things she shouldn't, memories and thoughts that aren't hers. She has to try and deal with things that most people wouldn't know how to let alone someone who has had their brain messed with. Simon did have her on medication, but her body kept adjusting. So she still had her cycles.
When she's aware, she does know she's a burden. She knows Simon would be home, she was stopping Kaylee from persuing a relationship, Mal was worried about her, and Jayne tried to sell her off. She doesn't like being broken. And as a genius, she does try to fix things that are broken including Shepherd's Bible.
She's exceptionally brilliant. She can do math that most just can't. She figured the angles to place her gun to kill three shooters with just one glance. Things need to be logical, which is why she tries to change the Bible. She also ends up becoming the pilot of Serenity after Wash dies. The way she speaks is deeper than just surface words. She often speaks in metaphors like describing a gun as just an object. In her mind's eyes, it's no different than a twig. She also tries to relay the graphic horror of the dead bodies she sees in that way. River doesn't just say 'there are dead bodies', she intricately describes how similiar they are to other things - color for instance. It's how she perceives things.
Due to being messed with, she also developed some odd quirks. River makes inappropriate comments and wanders about without shoes on. She laughs when she shouldn't, like when she convinces the bounty hunter he's gone mad. A part of this is her craftiness, like when she fakes a British accent to make sure a curious man doesn't become even more curious.
Simon discovers the part of her brain that processes emotion has been stripped. This also causes the tantrums. River feels everything. And being sensative to others, this causes a problem. When they figure out that an entire planet died due to some hormone injections that went wrong, she felt each of the bodies' deaths. She ends up knowing a secret she shouldn't have.
ABILITIES: Telepathy and psychic powers as well as a skills in physical fighting and weapons due to government expiramentation on her brain.
POSSESSIONS: A dress, boots, and a gun.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[The view at first is just of her bare feet, toes curling. She speaks though the camera is still on her feet.] Dorsal and plantar muscles. Extensor brevis digitorum. First layer. [She pauses to stretch out her feet.] Plantar. Abductor pollicis. Flexor brevis pollicis. Abductor minimi digiti. Flexor brevis minimi digiti. Flexor brevis digitorum. Lumbricales. Flexor accessorius. Adductor pollicis. Transversus pedis. Inter-ossei plantar.
[The camera moves up to her face. A vacant expression of a girl is staring into the camera.] I killed something out there. Blood on my transversus pedis. Bodies piling up. Doesn't matter. Human, mutant.. [She pauses to tilt her head and looks off, momentarily reading everyone on the island.] Wizard. Never met a wizard before.
They're not here though. No Simon. No Mal. Just River. [She frowns.] Not safe. Bodies pile up, things drown in that much red.
[She just blinks before the feed switches off.]
