Ooh, oooh, I know...none of us are actually smart! Did I win? If you haven't read "On Bullshit", I highly recommend it. In fact, I think I need to read it again. I'm sure there's more in my head on this...just need to percolate for a bit.
I'm gonna go with the fallacy "Hasty Generalization".
As for books, I like "Asking the Right Questions" by Neil Brown. You also can't go wrong with "The Trivium" by Sister Miriam Joseph and Marguarite McGlinn. You can probably find both at the library if you want to try before you buy. I bought both, they were awesome.
You want reasoning, language and politics? Try friending Suzanne Haden Elgin or ozarque in LJ land. You could also try virtually anything by Deborah Tannen, which is about communication and miscommunication, mostly gender-related.
By the way, I think it is a fallacy that smart people read books. If all I read is romance novels, does that make me smart? No. However, books can give us information that can make us smarter, if the books we choose are designed to increase knowledge rather than just mindlessly entertain.
