Too many toys.

I somtimes get the feeling that despite our best intentions our kids are spoiled. I am trying to sort out their toys, trying to put them in some kind of theme in boxes. You know Dinasours in one box, Dr Who in another etc etc I am coming to the conclusion that they just have too many. I am not aware of buying them loads, but every birthday seems to ( Read more... )

I think kids today have a lot more toys than we had. Part of it is probably that toys can be made more cheaply today; for me, part of it is that my parents didn't have much money when we were kids, and they were both the oldest in large families, so my grandparents were still putting some of their kids through college when I was little. Now, we have all of the grandparents (7, since they're all divorced and three remarried), aunts and uncles buying them stuff, and it's not only for holidays--any visit is an excuse to bring presents, even though we continually ask them not to do so. We give toys to charity and any other giveaway opportunity, and it still feels like we have toys spilling out of the windows!

When it comes down to it, the kids always have maybe 10 things that they love to play with, just like we did when we were little, and the rest of it just sits there.

I think you are so right, kids do have more toys because of how cheaply they are made, which filters down the consumer, and also I think explains why so many of their toys get broken so quickly even though they are not esp rough with them. I have an extended family as well, and maybe people don't see each other so often, so compensate maybe by buying toys when they visit.
I shall keep furtively filling charity bags in their absence, and try and remember that they wont always be so little, with quite so many toys. I'm sure when they are older they wont make any mess at all, ha ha :)
