I don't understand all this virtual gift giving, is it a competition?

Or are people just being friendly, I was really pleased to get my virtual gifts, but when I tried to return the favour I was told my account wasn't set up for it, and from my inbox it seems that people are sending them in their thousands, so I am wondering if I am missing something?

Heh--it's just for fun. Normally, the v-gifts cost you, unless you're a tech support volunteer or whatever, so people don't use them much. But apparently, because of all the tech glitches they had this week, one of the free, volunteer-only gifts was made available to everyone. The LJ Powers That Be discovered the error though, and took it down. :)
