Tom tipped his head back, swallowing the last drops of his drink.
“Another.” He said to the bartender, wincing at the taste in his mouth.
“How much are you trying to forget?” The bartender asked, reaching for Tom’s glass.
“Bit of a personal question, eh?” Tom sneered. The bartender laughed, pieces of his brown mop of hair falling into his eyes.
“Yeah, but I’ve been at this a while. I know when people want to talk.”
“Not this time.” Tom downed half his refilled glass.
“Fine, have it your way.” The bartender said, a soft smile on his lips. “My name’s Dan.”
Dan grinned, holding out his hand to shake. Tom peeked through his fringe with suspicious eyes. “It’s okay, it doesn’t bite.” Dan nodded towards his outstretched hand. Tom couldn’t help but smile, and gripped Dan’s fingers.
“Tom.” He offered.
“Nice to meet you, Tom.” Dan said, and turned to grab a bottle from the back counter.
“A boy.” Tom told Dan’s back.
“Excuse me?” Dan turned, forehead crinkling.
“A boy.” Tom repeated, blushing slightly. “That’s what I want to forget.”
“Ahh,” Dan nodded. “Tell me about it.” He sighed, leaning against the counter.
Tom slammed down the rest of his drink.
“No, really. Tell me about it.” Dan ordered while pouring Tom another.
“Erm,” Tom hesitated. Dan kept his eyes trained on Tom, waiting for him to go on. “Okay.” Tom gave in.
“There’s this… guy. We were together, I guess. For a while. And it was great. But then… I don’t know what happened.” Tom sighed, unsure how to continue. He wasn’t used to spilling his soul to strangers, but he quite liked the anonymous outlet.
“Doesn’t it always happen that way?” Dan filled the silence. “I’m having boy trouble myself.”
“Yeah?” Tom asked, willing for any excuse to ignore his own problems, even if it meant stepping into a stranger’s.
“Yep. My best friend, actually.” Dan admitted, pouring a drink of his own. “I’ve loved him for years, and he doesn’t even realize.”
“You’re very open.” Tom tried to laugh.
“Yeah, well, one of us has to be.” Dan winked. Tom smiled.
“He’s missing out.” Tom whispered, pushing an ice cube around in his glass.
“So is yours.” Dan blushed. Tom hid his face in his shoulder, trying to conceal a smile.
“Are you supposed to be drinking on the job?” Tom asked, clearing his throat with the obvious subject change. Dan looked into his glass like he hadn’t even realized he’d poured it.
“Wanna know a secret?” Dan asked, leaning over the counter towards Tom’s ear. Tom could feel Dan’s breath breeze across his cheek. His heart pounded in his ears. He managed a nod. “My shift’s been over a while. I stayed when I saw you.”
Tom’s breath caught in his chest. “R-really?”
“Yeah,” Dan nodded, color rising to his cheeks again. “Yeah, I did.”
“Say, you want to get out of here?” Tom pumped false courage into his voice. Dan hesitated.
“If anything happened, you’d be thinking about your boy and I’d be thinking about mine.” Dan pointed out.
“Yeah, I know.” Tom stood. He stared at Dan for a few moments. “Well, are you coming or not?”
Dan’s lips twisted into a smile as he followed Tom out the door.
