Skirt Thing

In his novel "Pattern Recognition," William Gibson's heroine has a piece of clothing lovingly referred to as "skirt thing" - an anonymous tube of black jersey knit that can be worn as a strapless dress or a skirt, scrunched up or down as the occassion warrents.
