I read an interesting article that spoke approvingly of the movie's message that men and women don't have to be lovers to be close friends, and how for once the Main Man and the Main Woman don't end up kissing at the end, which I thought was interesting. It's a movie I'd like to see, it seems like it's trying to do excellent things in a very imperfect way.
I agree, there needed to be more women in it, and there were plenty of opportunities! But overall I think I liked it a lot more than you - afterwards I found myself passionately defending it to my brother, haha. Glad you got to see it though - I did see your tweet, but way too late in the day!
I think I just came into it too cranky? So many opportunities for women casting wasted! I just think that since there had been so much coverage of the multinational characters of the film that my expectations were higher?
I ended up seeing at the closest cinema to me, couldn't convince myself to go into town!
Yeah, I think some of the things going around tumblr, for example, were setting over-the-top expectations re: representation. It tries but it's still Hollywood, and all that entails.
But lately I have been thinking a lot about women in media and like I said about halfway through, it really started annoying me.
I had a similar conversation with Lyn the other day. I find it hard to watch most mainstream movies these days because I'm so aware of things like the Bechdel Test, whitewashing and tokenism that they just piss me off.

the relationship between Mako and Rayleigh is pretty good, but didn't quite click 100% for me.
