I haven't read all of the manga yet as they are a little expensive here (10 USD per volume), I have the first two volumes. I saw the movie first, and absolutely loved it. It's actually my favorite Miyazaki film. The characters and themes are very strong, I love Nausicaa's character, and the imagery is amazing. It's a powerful environmental message without being preachy or condescending, and that is so hard to find in films of this type. Perhaps the movie only has a fraction of what's in the manga, but I don't have a problem with that. The movie is its own entity, and when you translate a story from one medium to another changes have to be made. Look at the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and how it had to be change and condensed from its original source material. The books and movies are very different from each other, but the spirit of the story and characters is still the same, and that's what's most important.
The first two volumes didn't quite make much impression to me... It's the last half of the volumes, the shift from the simple Nature/technoloy theme is what's so eye-opening in the original. I hope you get to collect the rest! The manga series is still hotly debated in forums. I see the film and the original as two dirrerent works and like them both. The imagery like you said is breathtaking.
DBGT was one of my favorite shows when I was in high school (I would buy it bootleg in Chinatown). Have you ever seen the live action DB movie made in China? Check it out! It's really funny.
