Looks like the fuse just blew when the light bulb disassembled itself explosively. Happy person, cheap repair :)

That is fuse actually /blew/, not just the safety clicking off. /That/ I coulda fixed myself.

I assume you mean the MCB (miniature circuit breaker) which is the thing with the switch on the front. You have several of these in a row in the Domestic Consumer Unit, which is the box with a bit red lever that turns off everything that distributes the power from the meter to the various circuits.

The MCB trips if the current exceeded a certain amperage (5A normally for lighting).

You also tend to have a single RCD (Residual Current Device) that detects flow of current to earth/ground and is what trips to protect from electric shock.

So the MCB burnt out and the chap put in a new one.

Well, I call it a fuse, cos it was fixed with new fusewire.
Yes, a 40-odd year old ex council house still has fusewire.

Oh, ok, you win, I know we had some fuses in our house at home but it was built in the 1900s. I thought everything had moved to MCBs now.
