Have you talked to your trainer about whether the weight gain could be muscle? Muscle cells are denser than fat cells, but also burn more energy. So if I've understood my trainer correctly, gaining some muscle weight actually helps in long term weight reduction.
In other words, all your notes about feeling better moving around, walking, golfing etc sound like better markers of progress than just the absolute scale weight. (especially if it is saying that air weights 18 lbs!)

Theoretically, it is impossible to gain muscle mass while on a significant calorie deficit. Not sure how close theory is to reality on this, but in any case I have a calorie deficit so I shouldn't be gaining net weight. I definitely agree that I want as much muscle mass as possible for the best long term situation, which is why I'm lifting as much and as often as I safely can.

And, I totally agree about all the other markers of progress. I'm not going to give up! Just getting a bit angry at my scale. (And I should get a more reliable weigh-in Tuesday when I go to Weight Watchers. We'll see about the 18 pounds of air then.)
