crisis of faith?

there's a new pope. he was once apparently part of the hitler youth movement (against his will). he is very hard line, conservative, and against turkey entering the EU because it is predominantly muslim. he called buddhism a self indulgent philosophy. the american press is trying to be encouraged by the fact that he chose benedict as his papal ( Read more... )

I haven't seen myself as Catholic in years and now even less.

Hey, maybe he'll send Galileo back into hell? I mean, it only took how many hundred years to get him out??

a third-world pope doesn't necessarily mean one who is more conciliatory and inclusive. in fact, a third-world pope may be even more doctrinaire and socially- and politically-conservative than a European one.

that being said, one never knows with Popes. There have been plenty of examples of popes doing the almost exact opposite of what they did before....

even if the third world pope was doctrinally conservative (and let's face it, he would be) at least then he would be in touch with the needs of the people he was supposed to be leading yes? i mean, i think like half of the catholics world wide are currently in the third world. and somehow i would feel better about a third world pope legislating morality, as he would have an understanding of just what it means in a context where morality isn't always a viable option ( ... )
