I savorsavorsavor these evenings alone.  This is going to be so good for me.  I was hit by an idea for a short story this afternoon and I've already got two (sloppy) handwritten pages.  I've been operating on the assumption for a long time that I didn't have any story ideas in me ( Read more... )

I have gotten into the habit of buying books on-line. I spent a good portion of my youth in a library, but now that I have some $, I prefer to own them (so I can highlight and take it into the bathroom without guilty feelings).

One site that I use is www.addall.com, which is a meta-browser for books. (Since Amazon is usually but not always the cheapest).

Let them buy you drinks, in my brief experience, these informal gatherings pay-off well more than the free drink.

really? what do you mean by "I've been operating on the assumption for a long time that I didn't have any story ideas in me." Is that your reason for your drive towards non-fictional narrative? Was your story idea pure fiction?

Did you have drinks? That sounded fun except for the four men part. I suppose they fawned over you:) which is fun... though I think men are so much more fun in the company of women. And that way we have someone to talk to when they get stupid!

Though not THE reason (which really is a deep love for the genre), it's a strong one. This story is based, loosely, on a memory shared with me, but I will fictionalize it heavily. I suppose that's how all fiction begins.

I just remember time after time after time after time trying and trying and trying to come up with a story and getting no where past the first line. Hence my assumption that I had no stories in me.

No, I did not go out to get that drink. My books and magazines held too much sway and I stayed curled up on the couch for hours. It was heavenly. : )

P.S. That Pat Conroy article really inspired me. : )
