I'm not sure I feel ashamed either, after all that Johnny Farnham song was #1 in Australia for a very long time. I suppose when I look back on it, and think about the typical songs I like, this one is an oddity, but then again, I loved 80's music, and I love it even more now.
That's about the ONLY song I can stand from Johnny.
The The were pretty high up in my estimation for a while in the eighties. A protest band in effect, before I got into Midnight Oil they were the protest band in my collection. What a nasty little socialist I was in the 80s.
I was just listening to some 10 year anniversary complilation that had it on it (and the Johnny Farnham one). Some interesting songs I had completely forgotten about.
Two bands I had never heard of when I moved to Australia were INXS and Midnight Oil. That was February '86 and from NZ. Either I was sheltered or Australian bands weren't as popular where I lived compared to other international bands (reggae was HUGE, Marley and at the time UB40 w/ Chrissy, 'I got you babe' was #1 for many many weeks).
It took me a while to get used to the singing style of Peter Garrett. The first song I had ever heard was The Dead Heart....and I *loved* it, and have fond memories of what was happening in my life when it came out.
Ahh the 80s.. i still listen to the 80s .. Justin tells me im stuck there music wise.. i seriously have no idea about 2000 bands at all
I do have to say to this day (although not aussie) im a sucker for the Bangles and their song Manic Monday. Aussie band wise well they were late 80s and they were RatCat.. yes im still listening to them LOL
*goes back to hide the rest of her 80s music that people laugh at*
Manic Monday was neat. I couldn't get into Walk Like an Egyptian though. There was another Bangles song I really liked but I can't remember what it was.
Internationally speaking, I loved Van Halen's 'Why Can't This Be Love', and for some reason (and it's not because of the boobs!) I liked Samantha Fox's 'Touch me'.
80's is still good, especially when there's not much to compare it to at present. That might explain why lots of old bands are making reunion tours... there's nothing to steal their encore limelight.
