History:
(( I apologize this is written sort of... crudely. History is always my weakpoint.))
Mao is an honor student at the Maritsu Evil Academy, a school owned by
his father, the chairman and local Overlord. This makes Mao the son of
the Overlord, and the rightful heir to his throne. Like many children,
Mao doesn't care about his father, about school, or doing good deeds.
He only has one goal in mind.
To defeat his father and take his throne.
Mao decides that the only way he can do this is by becoming a hero.
With the advice of his butler, Mao seeks to capture a hero and steal
his title. With this title, he will have the power of Love and
Justice, the two key elements he needs in order to take down an
Overlord.
So after kidnapping the hero, taking the title, and running off to
fight his father, Mao realizes that some things don't go "just as
planned". In fact, it utterly backfired on him. Mao, who doesn't
understand the concept of love, friendship, and justice, can't utilize
the strength those emotions give because he doesn't have them. This
promptly upsets and annoys him, but it's no matter. A new plan must be
devised because of this.
Mao's journey involves a trip to the Heart Bank, with Almaz at his
side (the hero who's title he snatched) they enter Mao's heart in
order to force it open. Along the way, they encounter many reflections
and fragments of Mao. His dark side, his true feelings, his love for
his father, his tears and anguish, these are all things Mao keeps
shoved in the Heart Bank. Out of sight, out of mind.
Throughout the game, he's confronted by Raspberyl, his childhood
friend, and many others who wish to help and deter Mao from his goal.
One of the biggest obstacles Mao seems to be facing is his
confrontation with the spirit that's known as his "True Feelings". He
angrily bickers with his True Feelings, a softer, wiser and kinder boy
than Mao is. Almaz ponders if this is who Mao truly is, someone who's
just curious about the world and who wants to be accepted by those
around him.
Many trips are made to the Heart Bank. None seem to succeed.
Throughout this process, Mao actually seems to be interracting with
more and more people. At one point, Raspberyl is kidnapped by the PTA.
Even though he refuses to say he has friends and that he doesn't need
anyone, after much consodilation from Almaz and Raspberyl's henchmen,
he agrees to help her. With his heart in the process of being opened,
(it's seriously like a giant locket with a huge lock on it.) Mao yells
at Raspberyl and saves her- because she is a delinquent (unlike Mao)
she thanks him, something Mao is incredibly not used to. He blunders
his words and yells at her, he doesn't need to be thanked. He doesnt'
need to be called nice! He's only doing these things because he's
forced to, nothing more, nothing else.
As Almaz watches him, he smiles. Mao isn't that bad of a person, he
begins to think.
TL;DR Throughout the story, there's also a competition for Student
President, which Mao obviously can't pass up. As he helps
(inadvertently) people out at the Academy, more people are starting to
support Mao. He's incredibly flustered by this and annoyed, but as
long as he has the vote he doesn't care. All seems to be going well
until Mao makes one final trip to the Heart Bank. There, they find...
Mao's dad's hand! That's strange, what's his hand doing here? They
fight it and after much tl;dring Almaz gets his hero title back from
Mao. But this causes problems with Mao, he loses his voice and la la
la Almaz has to realize he can't take his title back this way, he has
to earn it, and he gives it back to Mao so he can go back to normal.
Almaz states that he cares for Mao and he has to be strong for his
friends and la la la major plot points and Mao and Almaz gain +2 in
Friendship points!
All seems to go well, until Mao has to speak to the Third Level
Students. They're warring with the Second Level Students, and there is
an infamous group of Third Level Students known as the Ten Gentlemen
that are ruthlessly attacking the other students. Mao helps the 2nd
Level's Leader, Big-Star-Sama and even meets one of the members of the
Legendary Ten Gentlemen, Salvatore the Magnificent. In fighting her,
Jiiya, Mao's butler, is injured in the battle. Mao's inner darkness
nearly awakens and causes Salvatore to retreat, realizing how much
potential energy Mao has inside of him- he's a very dangerous person
to get upset.
To cut a long story short, Mao chases down Salvatore and demands she
tells him who the leader of the third level students are. She refuses,
perhaps due to not knowing herself, and disappears. During this time,
Almaz is severely injured, but refuses to acknowledge it. He's
poisoned, but states he's fine. Mao asks if he's going to die (half
jokingly and half apathetically) to which Almaz stutters that he
isn't, and that he shouldnt' talk about things like that.
Anyway, onward in the adventure. After the battle with Salvatore, Mao
asks Jiiya to find the leader of the 3rd Level Students, to which he
proclaims "BUT IT IS I, MAO!" and surprise, Jiiya is The Great Hero
Aurum and all goes to hell as he taunts Mao, betraying his trust and
being there by his side all of this time in order to use him and
manipulate him for his own good.
Mao is tremendously hurt by this, he takes his anger out on the
humans. He tells Almaz and Sapphire that he's going to rain hell on
the Human World, it's their fault. This is all their fault! In trying
to calm down Mao, they find out that Mao knew all of this time that
his father was already dead. His father was killed 200 years ago, cut
down by the great hero from the Human World. He despises humans, he
despises the Great Hero Aurum. He's tricked him all this time and he
wants revenge on those filthy humans.
So yeah, la la la. Mao explains about his father and how he can't
forgive Aurum- and in that effect humans. When he reaches the portal
to the human world, he exclaims that he's going to cause a sea of
blood using humans-- at this point, Mao's darkness is nearly released.
Raspberyl yells at him that this isn't right and holds him, he yells
at her to let him go - he wants to be lost to the darknes - and she
yells at him that it's not right. Almaz interrupts as well, explaining
to Mao that he can't blame one human's actions on their whole race.
Like Mao's hatred for humans, Almaz also hated demons. But now that
he's in the netherworld, he explains, he loves them. He loves his
friends, he loves everyone. Mao is taken aback by this, yells at him
and mocks him- to which Almaz shoots back at him that he even
considers Mao his friend.
Well! That certainly wasn't something Mao was expecting.
He also wasn't expecting Almaz to suddenly drop dead from the poison, either.
As he stars in shock at Almaz's words and sudden death, Mao's
personfication of darkness appears, Dark Mao! He scoffs and insults
Almaz, what a shame! He tells Mao that he better move over, because
he's going to take over now. After Mao fights Dark Mao, he realizes
that he's been a fool and so has Almaz. His voice starts quavering, he
yells and says he hates Almaz for not keeping his promise. At the end
of this scene, Mao is scene crying and ordering Almaz to come back to
life.
...Aha! And wouldn't you know it? A few moments later, Almaz's spirit
is seen speaking to Mao's true feelings- the embodiment of Mao's
honest thoughts. Mao's True Feelings gives Almaz the hero title,
relinquishing it because Mao doesn't need it anymore. With that title,
Almaz comes back to life as an honest and valiant hero.
Now that they're titles are back in order, it's time to take on The
Great Hero Aurum and settle the score once in for all.
TL;DR You have to fight The Great Hero Aurum and Mao sees that by
using his dark energy, he's falling into the evil genius plot devices
that Aurum has left behind for him. The final battle ensues with Mao
using the power of goodness in his heart to fight the Great Hero, with
his friends at his side, Mao and Almaz defeat the great hero- Mao
spares him (of an honorable hero ending) and decides to use him as a
test subject instead for his experiments! Before they leave the
castle, Mao has one final talk with his father's spirit - which has
been lingering (and watching over Mao) all of this time. He grants Mao
the title of Overlord, and he tells his son that he's proud of him and
that he loves him.
Mao, with his heart open and his emotionals set, thanks his father and
promises that he will be the best Overlord possible.
Mao was probably reading some comic books instead of doing his work
(being the new Overlord means he now has to take care of the school..
good job, Mao.) when he fell asleep on the job and here he is.
