The papal election a few years ago was pretty exciting... if they could somehow find a way to give more public insight into each round it'd be up there with the US Presidential elections. I know, it's not meant to be entertainment, and there are good reasons for secrecy, but even as a non-Catholic I find it interesting and important.

And more on topic, I agree that commentary on the Vatican can be a bit harsh at times.

Yes I am always fascinated with the level of non-Catholic interest in the papacy in general. It's very weird, like the French being really interested in royals.

I find Mary a very difficult figure, probably because it's so hard to get at her under the layers of pseudo magic rubbish she gets lumbered with in lots of Catholic culture. I find Julian of Norwich's vision of her, and her relationship with Jesus very moving though.

Yeah the Brazil thing is heartbreaking. I cannot fathom what they think they are doing.

The depth of your Catholic identification really moves me... there are parts I resonate with, and parts of which I long for in my own faith life.

I remember going to mass with a friend in Winnipeg - and I was broken open by the experience in a way I rarely, rarely am in Protestant worship. Thank you for reminding me of that.
