You may blame Russian bots

May 20, 2009 16:10

Today I was "friended" by six Russian bot accounts. So were some of you. As a result of this I am locking my journal from now on. Apologies to anyone reading this whom that effects. I've been getting around one a week for a long time now and have found lj support a) initially unhelpful to the point of being patronising and b) extremely slow ( Read more... )

Yeah they've been a problem for me, and my journal is entirely friend's only. I'm seriously considering switching to dreamwidth and bailing on LJ.

Yup. Haven't been on it much. Supposedly going to be ad-free. it's started by the same people who started LJ.

Oh, there's somewhere on LJ where you can report this, when I've done it the dodgy bot account has been suspended pronto. Let me try and find it, la la la....

I've reported them all, and had some of them disappear, and reappear with exactly the same names and been told I cannot report them again.

I've also had this problem for a lot longer than that form existed and when you report a bot while some disappear immediately some stay for weeks.

You can report them and ban them too, that way, even if they dont dissapear from LJ, at least they dont show up again on your account (under the same name).

Do the bots cause problems though? I mean, are you getting spammed to death?

I'm getting between five and twenty anonymous spams on very unlocked post I make now, and it's wrecking my head. Even with captchas on. Even when anonymous comments are screened. I filed an abuse ticket, and they were all "oh, once you mark it as spam enough times, the IP will be blocked". Where "enough times" is undefined, and is certainly not less than a hundred. Sigh.

No it doesn't cause problems per se but my posts appear on the friends page of these spamming twits. Not as annoying as your problem but you know what I mean.

I haven't found a way to log in with OpenID without leaving a comment, so I probably won't be able to follow your blog anymore.

I actually found it! I can log in from the LiveJournal home page. Why didn't I come to think about that before?
