Yes - come to think of it - one of the "trees" in my dream was made with something like funnel cake! Much sparser than a regular plateful of it tho'. Hmmmmm

Oh what do they call them, the cookies you make with a batter like funnel cakes but you dip an 'iron' in the batter then in the oil and the batter pops off in the shape of the iron?

Like these...-http://tinyurl.com/6fralk

I found a couple of recipes on cooks.com for 'rosette cookies' and 'rosette iron' batter.

Rosettes might work really well for the ones cooked separately and stuck on the skewers!

Why pour batter around it? Why not just lace in more phyllo dough?

OTOH, there's a particular variety of Christmas cookie that would do very well I think, if I can just remember what it's called. Or meringue cookie batter could work too, perhaps... what you're describing sounds like it would taste good with some lemon, raspberry, or other tart flavoring.

batter or something would be just for variety ... so it's not all nothing but phyllo ...

hm, meringue cookies, hadn't thought of those but they'd be perfect!

Crescent roll dough (the stuff you get in one of those scary airtight cans that pop when you twist them) would probably work - that cooks up nice and light.

Let me know if you try it! :)

aha, yes, a variation on flaky layered stuff instead of just phyllo! ... should work nicely ...
