Name help!

Okay so... FList, I need yor artistic input... AGAIN.

I've got a character who is sort of a... "reincarnation" of the Greek goddess Persephone. I'm playing her from the "Queen of Death" angle rather than the "Goddess of Spring" angle, but I need to think of a name for her. Here's the list of possibilities I've come up with

Well, if you are looking for a modern name none of those sound very modern. But of course that's just what I think. I think the most modern sounding name you have on the list is Lilith which is a pretty name.

Just brainstorming and trying to figure out meanings and came up with these:

Leyla (Arabic for "night").
Cora (Greek for "maiden") it pops to mind because somehow, I think it's linked to Persephone, but i can't remember how right now. That could be interesting, I suppose.
I think Renee is french for "reborn" or "rebirth" but I can't remember.

Those are the ones I can think of at the moment. The more modern ones, anyway.

Oooh! I like "Cora"! It IS linked to Persephone. It was one of the names she was known as. It was also the name given to a woman who was past the age of puberty, but not married yet. It was thought by the greeks to be a very dangerous time in a woman's life because she had the freedom of youth, but the bodily responsibilities of an adult. If she had sex (forcibly or no) before she was married she would be "worthless" and un-marryable. Also, if a woman died during this time, she was called a "Bride of Death"

I guess by "modern" I mean like... names you might hear someone name their child today. Someone you might find in a high school somewhere so.... yeah I dunno...

Well if you're going by what parents would name their kids and kids in high school then yeah the one that would be the most relevant would be Lilith. Or maybe Lily.

I thought Cora was a Persephone name. Good to know I was right somehow. And i'm glad you like it. :)

Modern-sh names, eh? Hrm. I think I like Lilith or Ophelia from the names you listed, though I really like the name Cora. It's a pretty unique name that would fit well with today's society -- a short, but very pretty name~ xD

Yeah, I'd agree with Emily, none of those sound modern. I'd say they're unique for sure but I think they're a bit too unique for a modern setting. I could see Adrienne or Ophelia. Where do you normally go name searching?

Honestly, the modernity isn't my main focus. The phoneics, origin and meaning are more important to the story.

I just type in "names meaning..." and put it what I'm looking for. I searched for "death", "dark", "black" and... some other things. There was one name site that had a "gothic" tag, so I looked through that list too.

Hmmm. I usually go to babynames.com and search for things there. That's what I was going to suggest had modernity been a factor influencing your name search.

Ya I knowwww -____-;;; my bad in wording my entry wrong. I have since fixed it stating I just need a NAME and completely nixing the "modern" aspect of it. I guess my idea of modern is different from everyone else's. Honestly, all the names I listed seemed plenty "modern" to me, even if they could also be "classical".

I'm pretty sure that was one of the sites I referenced though! Preeeetty sure. Most of the sites I looked at were baby name sites lol....

I think Adrienne and Morana are my favorite, if you're going for names one might hear today. Ophelia is a possibility, but less so in America than other countries, perhaps. If you're going for high school, Adrienne is more of a name from that generation, but I would say that Morana is definitely something that someone might name their kid these days. Haha, working at an elementary school is actually useful!

I also really like Morwenna just because it's super-pretty, but that one would be harder to swing... 8D;

I also really like the Cora suggestion.
