...so I don't go into whether they "should have made a reference" or not.

I think making a reference wouldn't have been an issue; it's the fact that -- and you can't know this if you haven't seen 'Fight Club' -- a lot of the dialogue is similar enough to make you double take. So similar I had to pull out my copy of 'FC' to check they weren't actual quotes (though they're not as grittily lyrical as FC's writing tends to be. Kudos to Chuck Palahnuik for the novel and Jim Uhls for the screenplay). The motivation is identical, for one; the scenes involving the stripping of the gun and the 'too much disposable income' part are also incredibly similar to scenes in FC ( ... )

Thank you for your excellent points about Fight Club. You're right - I need to wait a while before I see it. Otherwise, my head might explode.

I love morally ambiguous characters. People who always do right and behave with nobility are crashing bores, and unrealistic to boot. Only with flaws can there be growth. I'm a big fan of character growth. Look at Owen, who I despised in the pilot and now feel quite a bit of sympathy for. Not to mention how very different Jack is than he was in Who, because he's lived so long and seen so much since then. If he were the same suave, devil-may-care fellow then I'd be horribly disappointed. Now, if they'll just show us what happened to him...

Since I liked your last story, I tried to figure this out but since I don't know who any of these people are, I'm lost.

What is the "Fight Club" comparision (I love that movie - it is weird but really good)?

Take Care

Whoops, sorry, this is an episode review rather than an actual story. Must go back and fix the subject line...

Should've answered this part first: The series' recurring aliens, which are called Weevils by the Torchwood staff because they have no idea what they're really called, are being kidnapped and apparently tortured into committing murders. Turns out that they're wrong about WHY the kidnappings happen. There's a, well, fight club that pits men against men. It also has a caged Weevil that men can choose to fight with (or just stand still and let the Weevil kill them). Torchwood's Owen, whose life is totally on the skids, is their undercover guy who gets drawn into the fight club and tries to let the Weevil kill him. There's a Torchwood Ex Machina scene (they'd inserted a GPS into their "house Weevil" and let it be kidnapped so they could follow it) in which Owen is saved against his will.

Really, this is a wonderful series. Darker than XF, with seriously screwed up characters that make Mulder look like Mr. Rogers. Or like Farscape without the Mucking Fuppets. ;)

and to think that I LOATHED Owen in the first episode.

Amen. I was so upset FOR him and his descent into hell this episode. Stupid BBC. Did I mention that I hate them? HATE. Only I really, really don't. :(

Also, I am upset because I tried TWO different DL's and both were a few seconds off on audio and visual. Sigh.
