Oh those shift republicans...always up to no good...

Well that crazy recall thing worked in California, why not try to get more Republican power there...by splitting up the electoral votes by congressional district.

This angers me so much because it's just a blatant attempt to gain something from all California's votes that always go to the democrats, so that they can have a good chance of winning ( Read more... )

Here's the thing. I don't want a republican president next term. BUT I think that with how the electoral college votes work now, people's votes are not being properly represented to the point where many, many people don't even bother to vote. The proposed change for counting the electoral votes is actually more "fair", though I certainly agree with you that it would need to be nation-wide. There are though, I think, one or a couple of states that already count their votes this way, and I have to wonder if for the whole nation to change, what we need is for more states to do so to set the trend.

So I'm in an odd sort of a place, not wanting to support the people or the reasons actually behind this proposal, but thinking that it's actually a really good idea.

I hear where you're coming from. But even if CA does this, the democrats still have a very good chance of winning in 2008. And if the whole country switched to proportional assignment of EC votes, the results will benefit progressives. Now seems as good a time as ever to start the change.

Also CA is high profile enough that other states would probably follow quickly...but it still angers me.
