Prologue
It was May 1873 and still early. The mornings tended to be a bit too bright to sleep through but they barely even noticed. It hadn’t been too long since the bed had gone quiet, at least quieter-they always had to be quiet. It was sad, but it could be used as a small thrill when it was needed. It never was in love making though, it was just frustrating and lonely. To only hear the sounds of wood scraping against stone and some occasional groans wasn’t exactly what they had in mind when they had first started it. In their eyes and minds all they had seen were passionate cries and dark contours hidden inside the canopy bed. Like this, the best part was the afterglow. They knew Yunho had to leave soon, before the maid would come knocking on the door to awaken Jaejoong. Little did she know that he hadn’t closed his eyes throughout the whole night.
He played with the pale fingers on his chest, the nails most probably having small particles of skin underneath them, skin that had been removed from Yunho’s back in an attempt to keep quiet.
“Maybe while it’s dark, no one would see us. They wouldn’t know it was us.” Jaejoong didn’t answer-the discussion had been brought up and left in anger countless of times. They could never agree. Instead he chose to play with the golden band around the slim ring finger, removing it and then putting it back on. “I wish I could just throw it away and pretend it had never been mine.” Yunho whispered again, glancing at the ring. He usually took it off when they made love, but forgetting to put it back on again once before made him keep it there-mocking Jaejoong’s eyes every time they entwined hands.
He hummed. “I wish I could be wearing one too.”
Yunho sat up slightly, the covers falling from his stomach to his hips.
“You can, I’ve asked you.” He could hear the other man sigh in irritation, not knowing if it was because he had to rearrange his body to lie properly on a pillow instead or because of Yunho’s reply.
“And you don’t think my family would notice if I all of a sudden was engaged?” It wasn’t the whole truth. They both knew it. Jaejoong just didn’t want it, the small piece of hope around his finger that kept him hoping that one day it would be him and Yunho, that one day it would be accepted. It never would, they never could. The ring may be his, but Yunho wouldn’t be, and then what was the point in wearing it if it didn’t resemble them as a couple?
“Not if we ran away…”
“I’ve told you-no. I’m not leaving this town; I’m not betraying my own sister like that. She loves you; I have no right. Besides, this is ending soon anyways…” His hand was grabbed, the soft locks of Jaejoong’s hair tickling the other’s neck when Jaejoong was pulled up into his lover’s lap.
“It’s not ending.”
He scoffed-a sad sound that made him look weaker than he wanted to show. But not as sad as he felt. “And what are you planning to do? Tell Joo-Eun that you have to go to the market and then run to see me every day? It may seem easy now that you’re not living with her but it’s not.”
“Of course not. Do you think I’d want to be put in that position? I’m not stupid, you wouldn’t be happy that way and I know that.” Nothing else was said for a while, the scent of musk and vanilla being the only thing Yunho could focus on-the only thing he wanted to focus on. “You’re really making it harder than it is… I just want to be with you. Ever since Joo-Eun introduced me to you I’ve never thought about anything else. I’ve never felt anything else.” The sunlight was growing stronger; by the time it reached the door they knew Yunho had to be gone. The heavy head shyly snuggled further into the space between Yunho’s neck and shoulder.
“I love you too.” With a smooth stroke a large hand held his chin in place, a soft kiss being their reassurance for now.
“Good…” They opened their eyes, eyelids too heavy and sad to stay up any further. But they had to and Yunho slid out of bed to quietly get dressed. Jaejoong watched while laying on his stomach, the soft curves and hard muscles making him forget that Yunho wasn’t his. They stared at each other for a while, Yunho refusing to leave just yet and Jaejoong trying to make time stop.
Just for now, just for today can’t everything just freeze…?
“Bye.” He finally said, already expecting to hear the maid’s knock any second now.
“I will see you later.” He kissed him one last time, Jaejoong’s fingers subconsciously cupping the rough cheek in front of him. They broke apart, the soft parting of lips creating a longing to unite again. Yunho’s eyes found Jaejoong’s bright ones, dead set on not showing anything but the truth. “It’s not ending.” He traced Jaejoong’s cheekbone with a finger. “Not when it has barely even started.”
He climbed out the window, Jaejoong’s arms supporting his weight as he looked out at Yunho making his way down. The coffee brown hair glowed a warm coco in the sun, and soon it was tilted back, the amazingly dark eyes replacing the top of his head. The soft locks fell behind to sail in the wind, reminding Jaejoong of tied down sparrows. He smiled at waved once before disappearing, leaving Jaejoong with the knowledge that if he could he would have yelled out his love to the beautiful man watching the back of his future brother-in-law.
-------------------------------------------------
Breakfast was sunny and warm outside on their terrace. Giant oaks were filled with singing birds, an occasional cloud cooling Jaejoong’s head from the frying heat. His brown hair wasn’t helping either, the mahogany tint it got in the sun only showing how thick it really was. He leaned back in his chair when one of the maids went to fill his cup with fresh coffee-god knows he needed it. He smiled against the rim of his cup, hoping that his parents didn’t notice his happy mood. Just thinking about what had kept him up last night made him want to laugh out loud like a love sick fool, forgetting about the problems for a while.
A dove wandered around on the ground, looking for breadcrumbs that Jaejoong would occasionally throw out to it, despite his parents telling him not to. It was instantly chased away by one of their new maids-bird poo wasn’t appreciated on their expensive terrace.
“You look tired, son. Didn’t you sleep well?”
He took a big gulp of coffee, trying not to smile when all he wanted was to brag about his late night adventures with the gorgeous male they thought would only occupy their daughter’s bed.
“The birds awoke me early.”
His father looked up from the newspaper. “Maybe if you stopped feeding the damned things they’d be quiet.”
Eun-Hee put a thin hand on her husband’s arm. “Now, don’t fight. You could take care of the birds couldn’t you, Chung-Ho?”
Jaejoong wrinkled his nose and sighed. He knew what taking care of meant to his parents. “It’s fine, mother, I don’t mind the birds.”
She only shrugged and sipped her tea, signalling for one of her most trusted maids to fetch her another piece of bread. “Thank you.” She accepted the food and the maid bowed before backing away, standing by in case she would need anything else.
“Lovely day, isn’t it? Do you have any plans, Jaejoong?” She made sure to speak her full sentence before taking a small nibble of bread. She put the slice down on the table and wiped her dress free from any crumbs. That was how she had been raised, and exactly the way she had raised Joo-Eun. Jaejoong, however, had somehow managed to turn out the way he himself intended to. Good thing that was, otherwise he probably wouldn’t be anything special, wouldn’t be anything for Yunho. He could barely even remember what his days looked like without Yunho in them. They were darker, that was the only thing he was certain of.
“I was thinking about going down to the market for a while. Donghae will be there.”
She nodded in approval, washing the small amount of breakfast down with her tea. “How is he? We haven’t seen him for so long.”
“He’s fine.”
“And marriage? His parents talked to us about how they’d love for him to find a nice girl soon, it surprises me that they haven’t introduced him to Lee’s daughters yet.” He lowered his gaze, knowing what was coming. “What do you think of them, Jaejoong? I know you’ve met them before, they’re all beautiful nice girls, aren’t they?” He swallowed an irritated sigh. He knew she only wanted his well-being but it saddened him that he could never tell her that he wasn’t interested in girls at all.
“Of course, they’re all nice girls.” She smiled in adoration and hope, her eyes sparkling in pace with the pond softly running a couple of meters next to them.
“Well, they’re practically young women now!” She smiled, hinting things Jaejoong understood perfectly. “But I’m glad you think so; they invited us over for dinner tomorrow night. Of course Joo-Eun and Yunho will come too; they’re all invited to the wedding and would like to meet them before the big day.” She had a huge smile on her face now, just talking about the wedding made her happy. He wished that Yunho could see her now; maybe then he’d understand why Jaejoong was so reluctant to steal her happiness for his own.
Hearing that Yunho would be there made him both happy and nervous-would they see that something was going on between them? But at the same time, having Yunho around was always better than not having him around.
He wiped his mouth with a napkin and stood up. A maid immediately came running to pull the chair out for him and he bowed to his parents.
“I’ll be going now. Mother, father.” He bowed once more and left the table to go make himself ready for a day out. He combed his hair carefully-you never knew where you might run into Yunho after all.
