Report #1 Weird Ass Religions

Mar 30, 2008 18:05

Today's subject is Scientology.  After a week worth of mining for information, being contacted by email by a member of Scientology to take "Dianetics" courses, and almost (ALMOST) being tempted to do so just for hilarity factor (I don't have $50 to spare and after all I am reading the book of Moron Mormondammit) I have finally prepared a summary ( Read more... )

So the religion is harmless at its base but possibly cult-like in its chewy center.

Ah, yes... but as well we all know, so were Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism at one time.

There is some interesting reading available online about the relationship between L. Ron Hubbard and an occultist by the name of Jack Parsons, in the years before Scientology. Parsons was a rocket scientist working for Jet Propulsion Labs out in California during the 40s and 50s, and was also a student/follower of Aleister Crowley and one of the key occult figures in the US. Hubbard basically ended up conning Parsons out of most of his money, a charter boat business they went into together, and his girlfriend. Parsons was a serious occultist (and as such a bit eccentric), while Hubbard was pretty much just getting his kicks. Hubbard went on the fame (or infamy) and fortune, while Parsons was killed in an explosion while working in his home lab. I have more info on Parsons if you're ever interested.

Hubbard and Parsons were NPCs in the "Signals" LARP campaign... Parsons was one of the major villains, and he was fronting for Xenu, which was evil, in league with evil Grey aliens, and wanted to destroy the world...
