Ah, yes... but as well we all know, so were Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism at one time.
There is some interesting reading available online about the relationship between L. Ron Hubbard and an occultist by the name of Jack Parsons, in the years before Scientology. Parsons was a rocket scientist working for Jet Propulsion Labs out in California during the 40s and 50s, and was also a student/follower of Aleister Crowley and one of the key occult figures in the US. Hubbard basically ended up conning Parsons out of most of his money, a charter boat business they went into together, and his girlfriend. Parsons was a serious occultist (and as such a bit eccentric), while Hubbard was pretty much just getting his kicks. Hubbard went on the fame (or infamy) and fortune, while Parsons was killed in an explosion while working in his home lab. I have more info on Parsons if you're ever interested.
