Wow, that’s definitely a huge decision. On the one hand, there are inherent dangers. But on the other hand, you have been considering this for a long while. A very long while. You have the personal contact to know the dangers and benefits and you’re smart and realistic enough to have evaluated them before even making this post. I think that the fact that you’re still interested in it after all this time speaks volumes.

I won’t pretend I want you to go - we’ll see you even less that way, and it *is* dangerous - but I think it sounds like it’s something you want to do, something you’ve considered in a mature and responsible way, and something I suspect you’d be good at. So I'm behind you if it's what you decide to do :)

I don't pretend to know much about the subject except that I have the utmost respect for people in the armed forces. The major downside, as others have pointed out, is that you will be gone for a long time, and we'll miss you. But that's pretty insignificant to what you want in YOUR life.
If this is something you want to do, I say do it. You've considered the options, weighed the pros and cons, it's too big a decision for me to even pretend to have any kind of say in the matter, but you're a very mature person, and you'll decide what's best.
