OK, I'd just like to make it perfectly clear that anyone who is ok with, or supportive of, the gutting of this country's public services ~educaton, the NHS, the police, the military, benefits~ in order to avoid demanding the vast quantity of tax money that this and the previous governement have wilfully and specifically allowed numerous ( Read more... )

"I do not wish to even have to acknowledge the existance of such people."

Isn't that quite dangerous? Is this not the first (tiny) step on the (very long) path that leads to bigotry and a Daily Mail subscription? The road to hell, after all, is paved with good intentions.

I understand why you would be angry, but anger is a terrible foundation to base anything on.

Wrong.

Anger is a brilliant foundation to base things on.

The civil rights movement was founded on anger, feminism was founded on anger, parliamentary democracy without the autocratic rule of a monarch was founded on anger.

Just about everything that ever brought respite, rights and justice to the downtrodden and shit upon was founded on anger.

If we're not supposed to be angry at evil what's the fucking point?

You're talking about Britain? Cause the US is pulling the same BS. Or the Republicans are trying to ("no, we can't not extend a tax cut on the top 2% of all earners!"). Despite something like 70% popular support for that particular item.

Although actually we could use some military cuts. Not to the stuff that affects the guys on the ground - and veterans need better than they're getting. But to the dumbass programs that even the military says are wasteful, and are only being kept because they're in someone's district.

It's not even about upping tax, it's about the actual billions owed this country by companies like Vodafone and fucking NewsCorp, which would be more than enough to cover all, actually all, of the cuts that are happening to public services.

And we don't have big military projects like the ones you describe, all the money is coming out of 36,000 soldiers not being replaced as they die or retire -while we still have enough deployments on to overstretch those we have- and hardware that stops them dying. I'm not a militarist, but some of those soldiers are friends of mine and hopefully soon my wife.

Wow, that's even dumber than ours. Which is really, really sad.

Sorry, should clarify, the 36,000 is across the whole military, only 19,000 are Army, the others are RAF and Navy, but that's ok, because they're getting rid of most of the planes and boats too :/
