Exceptions:

I would adore computer programs-

1) any word processor with a spell checker (seriously, anything, I don't care how cheap/stupid. All else fails, I'll continue writing in TextEdit and just use whatever for spell checking. Just. I need something ;_ ( Read more... )

PC for the spell checker, and Mac for the graphics.

Oh, and a word count ability would be love too ^_^;;

Not to ruin the idea of buying you gifts, but have you tried Google's word processor? I have -- it's really not bad, especially for being free.

It does have a spell-checker and word count, both of which work well.

The advantage of that is that you should be able to log in and work on your document from anywhere, and it's also easy to allow other people access to it.

Also, OpenOffice.org is free, open-source software which duplicates the functionality of Microsoft Office. I've used OpenOffice Writer, and it's very easy to get used to if you already know Microsoft Word. If you don't, it's still not hard to use its basic features.

If what you'd like as a present is for me to set that up for you, I'd be happy to. :)

The best graphic design programs are definitely still commercial.

OpenOffice is free and presumably does spell checking. Else, I should buy youse guys
a family license for iWork. The Gimp or GraphicConverter is a good bet for simple
photo editing. Or you can get Photoshop half off since you're a student.
