So if the mechanic broke your dipstick, why did you have to pay for it?

because it's a part, and they won't pay for parts. They claimed it was already broken, and was just stuck in the pipe thing. I would have driven my car without the dipstick, but it's a pressure issue; my car would blow up without the dipstick or something.
