Ok...well I teach social studies, so obviously I should have something brilliant to say...

I think it's hard not to be proud of being an American. The United States is a beautiful, successful country which bases its existence not so much on any particular historical sense of Nationalism as it does on a fundamental ideology of human rights, democracy, meritocracy, and capitalism, all of which seem to me to be good things.

Its sometimes embarrassing to be a US Citizen, though, because any country as powerful as the United States runs into a certain amount of problems tripping over its own ego (i.e. the war in Iraq, the "God Bless America" stuff), and obviously the US has a history of Colonialism and economic manipulation and racism and all kinds of terrible stuff. That said, what makes the United States so particularly impressive is that when the USA fails to live up to its promise, it works to change that, and the United States has worked to become more and more true to its founding principles.
