Ruby sits at the base of her blood drenched altar and watches the bones of slaughtered babies dry over red in the moonlight. Their little mouths are open in perfect, tiny circles, and the blood is black across their lips. The candles at the altar’s corners are almost nubs of wax. Ruby stares at the full harvest moon, rejection burning a small, bitter hole in her abdomen
