The things I've always hated about MMO's is the anonymity and sameness. Everybody is essentially the same, same look, same quests, same talents (or feats or whatever). There is very little to distinguish you from any other "Warrior" or "Mage" or whatever. I guess Galaxies was good for that because you could look unique and in the context of the game you could be known for for your crafting. Nice, but not quite enough for me.
I think initially LotR sounded cool, but I don't think they delivered on their quest system, at least based on what they were originally planning. I figure we might finally see something along the lines of what I want in about 4-8 years. I'm gonna watch Conan closely, but won't be an early adopter (I'll wait for the 360 if anything), but really for now I'm completely bored by all upcoming MMO's I've seen.
Actually LotRO does do one thing cool on the quests. Unfortunately u need to group for most of these. THey have the mainline quest chains called Books or Epics. THese chains basically mirror the stories in the TOlkien books as u interweave around the main plot of the Fellowship of the Ring. And then they bring into these mini instances where u would do escort or kill 1 boss. But they r short and have a lot of them. Turbine seems to be going on the path of doing 1 Book every 2 month.
I dont think this is anyway leading to the great epic-ness i seek, but its actually very different than WoW. The game actually feels more low-key in the sense of magic and fantasy. And the music is much moody-ier to Middle Earth. Plus i can clearly say going into the Old Forest by Bree does give u a creepy feeling. Specially when u see the Elite Old Oaks... and go "Oh shit they can move!!"

are we going to hang out? i'm gonna be at skylab from 9/6-9/10 with committments on thursday night, friday night, and sunday afternoon...but aside from that i'm free. besides visiting friends, i'm going there to see the olafur eliasson show at the SFMOMA so i will probably do that on one of the days.
MMOs really are in a bit of a design funk. I mean, WoW wasn't even a terribly original game when it came out; it mostly just refined the Everquest model. Until programmers learn how to create a game that dynamically creates storylines, so that not every character of a given type walks the exact same path, I think we're going to remain in this rut. That's why I was bummed when Wish was canned; they were at least trying to break out of the WoW/Everquest mold with live GMs controlling storylines.
