Tuesday morning, the New York Times posted no less than five "headliner" articles related to the shootings at Virginia Tech which took the lives of 33 people Monday afternoon. My heart truly goes out to all of the families affected by this tragedy ( Read more... )

i think that the united states is very self-centered in general. we rarely cover articles overseas (unless it directly relates to keeping us in a state of fear and distrust such as with the "war on terror"...we don't even hear much about our individual troops out there), but we overglorify local (bad) news.

in other countries they have REAL media coverage. i've chatted with folks online before from other countries and when i tell them where i'm from (at the time it was the northeastern US), they actually brought up a current event in my region. what the hell? i honestly couldn't find their homeland on a map without studying it for awhile. (i admit i am a product of this nation-centric society.)

our media here is just pathetic and sad. it makes me angry most of the time. i try to read my news online, but i know that's not solving the problem. i just feel somewhat helpless to get other people to realise how terrible our media is. that we all need to demand better.

I actually had this very thought when I read the news on BBC (I don't even read american newssites anymore - too skewed). why doesn't anyone care about what happens outside this country?! by extension, american media makes it sound like global warming is something that's going on in bangladesh, not alabama. !@&^!*&@^!*&@^!*&@!

Chad and I were just freakign the F*^K out over this yesterday. WTF!!!??!?! Yeah, it sucks about VT. But seriously!!! Why is it *more* upsetting than what is going on in Iraq? ARGH! I HATE U.S. MEDIA! One reason we'll be doing the Turnoff TV Week starting Sunday. I just want to boycott the whole damn thing. Why do we have to read British news to get the "real" scoop on anything? It's infuriating. Infotainment can suck it.

So yeah, I'm right there with you.
