A New Book I'm Excited to Read...

I love Elizabeth Hand's work. Her mastery of craft is stunning. Every project is ambitious, and the ideas are always interesting and unique.

Therefore, though I'm leery of the current stampede of genre authors hopping aboard the YA train, I have to say I'm willing to give her new novel illyriaa try.

Hey Melinda -

Thanks so much for your kind words. Just so you know, Illyria was originally written and published as an adult novella, in a very small UK edition (couple hundred books) in 2007. Sharyn November, a YA editor at Viking here in the US, read it and wanted to publish it as YA in hopes of reaching a larger, crossover audience. Since the protagonists are teenagers for part of the book, this made sense. Not sure how actual teens will react to it, but we'll see.
