I had that kind of reaction as well. The fact is that I wouldn't be comfortable in a crowd of 50,000 doing anything at that level of intensity. (I've been in large marches/demonstrations a couple of times, but they were diffuse enough that it didn't get (for me) to that kind of ecstatic engagement.) I think there's a place for the experience of shared ecstasy, but for me, it's always going to be in smaller groups.

Yeah. That's kind of what I thought. I don't even like going to football games because that kind of crowd insanity scares the shit out of me.
