i think i will read the first one first...but, burton barr has the second in a vault, the description reading:

First edition; very rare. Octavo, bound in mottled old calf; covers stamped in blind; bands raised; compartments stamped in gold; red morocco label on spine. Published anonymously; written by Horace Walpole, who acknowledged the authorship in the second edition. Cf. Halkett & Laing; A.T. Hazen.
Front free end-paper inscribed by Augusta Walsingham.
Published in Dec. 1764, 500 copies. Cf. A.T. Hazen.
Hazen, A.T. Walpole, 17. ESTC, t063198.
Ex libris Alfred Knight.

I want a vault filled with first editions!

ps. what do you think of umberto eco? i like certain quotes by him, such as

"In order to be so perceptive about the meaning of a spot on someone's shoe, you have to ignore the solar system. As for my own incuriosities, I am so uninterested in them that I do not even know they exist."

and

"Every day I do the less urgent task -- this gives me a sense of adultery."

I have never read anything by him though...
