Mildew Question

Aug 09, 2009 08:24

My husband found a large box of gorgeous vintage ribbon at the dump. Unfortunately all but the top layer smells of mildew. Any ideas??

The ribbon is rayon, acetate, taffeta, silk and grosgrain.

Being shut up in an airtight container with crumpled newspapers, baking soda or (unscented) kitty litter are the usual suggestions, also sunlight but that might fade them more. Good luck!

There is a product called Restoration - I don't know how it does for mildew but it's pretty awesome at removing stains - you could try oxy clean too if you don't want to buy restoration. Probably hand washing won't hurt them...

i wonder how hot rayon can get before it melts? putting in a warm (not hot!) oven works great on paper, and i used it to demildew a hat once too.
