"Orthodoxy" and "Heresy"

Part of last night's Church History lecture was on constructions of "orthodoxy" and "heresy" in the early Church. I found myself getting a bit frustrated at some points, as the Gnostics were portrayed in a rather favorable light at times, and people like Irenaeus were portrayed as deceptive and slight hypocrites because he came up with a new, ( Read more... )

I think the only real 'golden age' of the 'church' was the Acts 2 church - during Pentecost and immediately thereafter. The Bible describes everyone as very happy and of one-mind. I recently even heard a sermon preached on this; seek the will of God and we'll all get along, or something. Except he wasn't so drivelly with it, he was actually quite clear and edumacated ( ... )

It has nothing to do with whether you sing hymns or praise choruses, and nothing to do with if you ordain practicing homosexuals or not.

That's a really good point. But I think these things (to a very limited extent), point to some sort of truth that one adheres to.

There IS a Truth out there, and he even named himself as such.

Ben has this wonderful conception of God as Truth, thus characterizing Truth as a being - something one can interact with. It seems like you're kind of thinking along the same wavelength. :-) (Oooooh...wavelength....math...physics...withdrawl...)

Yeah, I think certain aspects of gnosticism do, because it's very rooted in Greek philosophy.

I hate it when that happens. I think neither side can claim "orthodoxy."

Part of me is starting to wonder if any one can truly claim "orthodoxy"...

aparently, the eastern orthodox church does. I roomed with two of them one summer, and they were both very into it, believing that their style of worship was exactly that of the apostolic church, directly handed down over the past 2000-ish years. Very interesting, really.

We will know if fully, just not on this side of the curtain.

Right. But at the same time, there do seem to be some rather fundamental things that we know.

I feel that the only force that allows paradox is Christ crucified. There's your "middle ground."

Amen!
