highlights from the florida trip:
- we arrived on monday. most of our luggage arrived on wednesday. (my parents' and my luggage, somehow, actually arrived with us.) the philadelphia (or perhaps just usair?) baggage handlers were on strike, and many people were working for free on their days off, as a possibly drunken flight attendant informed us. on the one hand, striking when your company is dying seems kind of silly; on the other hand, the CEO is probably still making his multimillion dollar salary and will be able to write off the company's implosion on his taxes, while the people on the bottom rungs have kids to feed and are probably a little pissed about the whole thing.
- trying to get through the airport in a herd of 14 people = not fun. i'm used to traveling alone and doing my own thing.
- they frisked my gramma. that really isn't right. the woman is 84 years old.
- the restaurant at the resort was really, really fancy. due to aforementioned luggage issues and the fact that we aren't really Resort People, we were not.
- the bartender's name was steve.
- finished le guin's the dispossessed and gaiman's stardust, both excellent. yay reading again.
- on tuesday, my parents and i drove down to the everglades. it was hot and humid and that's when i got yet another cold. we did eat at mel's diner for lunch, though, which amused me for obvious reasons, and visited america's smallest post office.
- wednesday, due to cold, i slept in the room all morning (which i shared with my parents. my dad stopped snoring when he lost all that weight, but now my mom snores, and i'm convinced i have sleep apnea.) ate lunch and then slept on the beach all afternoon, covered in sunscreen. Am still pasty white. thought about taking a dip in the pool, but it was closed because a small child had pooped in it.
- thursday, my cousin betsy and i went to st. armand's circle, the local Shopping District, where i had an odwalla juice which temporarily cured the cold with 1000% of the usrda of vitamin c and actually saw a
louis ghost armchair in real life. when i am rich i shall have one.
- and in the middle of this, as we know, thousands of people died on the other side of the world, and here i was lying on the beach in the land of plenty and not even having to cook my own meals, and ... i have been thinking about this all week, all half-formed thoughts, not sure what to say. i spent time looking for cars in the parking lot that cost less than my annual income, finally found one, and then realized it belonged to one of the housekeeping staff, which was overwhelmingly hispanic while the clientele was overwhelmingly white...

suu pigsat. it was twee's first road trip. she and nori are not at all fond of car rides. they are now also known as "nori tea" because suu's little niece can't say "twee" yet.
and now i'm back. spent a leisurely new year's with the boy, spent yesterday doing nothing, gloriously. now my living room is full of suitcases and bags of laundry and miscellany. it needs to be taken care of. this may or may not happen. new year, same brain.
