Kouyou’s eyes don’t bleed into the star-stippled sky very often. But recently,
he’s been growing wings.
-
He felt the tickles one afternoon. The sun was beating on his temples and guitar strings, they glinted like crushed gold. When the tip of his thumbnail scraped against the string, it trembled in a muddy little noise. It was Kouyou’s first time on a guitar, to him, it sounded good enough.
So he went to find Yuu. He wanted Yuu to hear him ‘play’.
Because he’s the only one Kouyou wanted to play for.
Yuu was swinging his legs on the stairs before his front door. Black shorts, bare feet with dirt caked on the soles, front teeth missing. Yuu’s cheeks glowed in red. It was the sun.
Yuu saw a small dot emerging on the horizon before him, the dot was coming into his view, it grew larger and larger. The dot had arms and legs and a wooden guitar that was too big, it had bare feet as well. Yuu leaped from the folds of the stairs when he recognized those small, gleaming black eyes. Yuu beamed bright in front of the boy. It wasn’t the sun.
Kouyou’s grubby fingers burned in a salmon shade. He pressed the chord and strummed, five fingertips at once.
It was jarring, to say the least.
But Yuu grinned until his burnt cheeks started to turn white and flaky, his empty gums showing. He loved it.
After all, it was Kouyou.
And that’s all it mattered.
-
The first quill started to poke through his back while he was sitting in a dim coffee shop, face painted white, cheap extensions clipped in his bleached locks.
Back then their faces were all smeared and painted in a similar way, it was hard to tell them apart. But Yuu, not Aoi, always looked a little different from the rest.
It must be his teeth, Kouyou thought. If he squinted, he could still see the jagged gum he saw when Yuu grinned. That was ten years ago, but that’s the only way Kouyou will ever picture Yuu when he smiles.
"This is our new guitarist.” Ruki introduced Yuu to them.
“Yeah, I know.”
-
His feathers are bent inside his leather vest, the glitters in his hair are falling into the nail beds of the audience.
Uruha is on the left, Aoi is on the right.
Uruha lets his fingers cross and tangle between his strings. He juts his body toward the audience. They scream. He juts again.
Aoi is busy catching breaths, keeping eyelashes in place, and plunging into open arms and screams and sobs and fallen glitters.
They don’t exchange eye contact. They are merely Uruha and Aoi behind glazed guitars, gaudy costumes, and hushed glories.
As soon as they shed their slick skins of Uruha and Aoi and crawl back into Kouyou and Yuu, everything shifts back to the way they were.
The sky is blue again, and like the neon lights that slathered across their skins under the black roof, stars are hung above their heads and the light is caught between their eyelashes. They are like crushed gold.
And Kouyou’s wings are able to breathe again.
And after all these years, Yuu still holds onto them.
