I'm a HUGE H2 fan. I had a pin-up poster of him in my locker in 6th grade.

OK, I'm lying about that one, but I do love his stuff.

Really good shit! Other pieces by these composers that I highly recommend:
Creston - Dance Overture, Symphony No. 2 (there are no good recordings of either)
Hanson - Mosaics, Symphony No. 4 (Seattle recording is best)
Muczynski - Flute Duets, "Time Piece" (cl+pno)
Antheil - Mechanical Ballet Music, all symphonies (jazz symphony especially)

What good suggestions!!!

Creston - Dance Overture - Excellent of metric notation...becuase it goes from 12/8 to 9/8 to whatever the hell else due to accent displacement....LOVE IT!

Hanson - Mosaics - Nice and mysterious!!! Good piece...should be played more...I agree.

Muczynski - "Time Piece" - My friend Jamie played this on her clarinet recital...yeah...I don't think she liked it...but I did!

Antheil - Mechanical Ballet - Funny...yet a work of genius. I must listen to more of his symphonies so I can play my favorite game... "Drop the Needle"

The Creston, I think, has a parenthetical notation of 18/16 - which is awesome! Mosaics is great, but I think that Symphony No. 4 is extremely under-rated for no good reason.

That's it!!! 18/16...it's something hella weird. I only heard it once when I heard the Illinois All-State orchestra play it like 2 years ago.

*Sigh* - good music is soo hard to come by these days....

I want to add Alan Hovhaness to your list! Can I? Can I?

Love,

Oh you most certainly can! Check it...

How many symphonies did he write....like eleventy-billion (some are lost forever)

Extremely inward writting, however, once you understand it...eye-opening...

Mysterious Mountain...wows me...

Psalm and Fugue is an excellent piece for strings

Hovhaness should be played...like right now!

Bruce!!! we did Hanson 4 the "Requiem" the year before you came to marrowstone! You missed it! Festival Orchestra did the whole thing 3rd week along with the Creston Mirimba concerto and the "Ball" movement from Symphonie Fantastique... it was fuuunnnnn. :-D

Too bad you missed the week we covered both H2 and Creston!

Hope you've been well, post-marrowstone. I know I'm in withdrawal!

But I love Jarrod even more! Where have you been? I'm glad you're still alive. Can't wait to see you again in about a week!
