does anyone know why my mother's computer would play the music and soundtrack for a DVD, without playing the voices properly ( Read more... )

Have you tried updating the software you are using to play it?

yeah. I checked it with 2 other DVDs, that I knew worked properly. they all did it.
the only actual sound I get is the sound before having the dialogue looped in. It's like a channel is missing from the sound mix.

I'm assuming it's played sound fine before this? It kinda sounds like you might be missing a codec, though I have no idea of which one. I'll see if I can pick some brains tomorrow, see what I can find out.

i thought about that. but as far as I'm aware, you shouldn't need a codec for a licensed DVD. which is what this is. and it happens on games I've tried to play, as well as mp3s. anything with sound, as well as dialogue.
My mom says it's not recent. She started having trouble last fall, and just never mentioned it.
