For anyone who knows me, the second-place winner is too weird for words and I think it's sort of insulting. I want to know exactly which questions/answers led to that particular assessment.
It straddles the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorous Strait, one of which (I forget which) is used as the line of demarcation between Asia and Europe, so your tour guide was right. However, something like 2 percent of Turkey's landmass lies on the European side, so I think their claims to European-ness are on shaky ground.
Istanbul calls itself European whenever that suits it politically. Turkey's been trying to use that dot of Europe in its landmass in order to play the bicontinental peacemaker card for decades, but its propensity for stepping on smaller or weaker nations kind of undermine the image they're trying to project. I have little to say about Turkey that is positive. If that makes me narrow-minded, so be it.

Wasn't Constantinople meant to be the gateway between East and West?
I'm Italian too with Spanish and Russian(?) close seconds. Oddly I'm only 13% Irish.

Why is 'Turkish' insulting to you? Just curious.
