My mom told me a story I haven't heard before. How it came up on a mother's day phone call is difficult to explain, but the way our relationship has evolved, we were able to have a good laugh about it

Anne, you are the only person I currently know - and one of the damn few I've ever known - that can tell stories to make my childhood family situations seem sane.
I can count on one hand the times I've met my "real" father. Once when I was 7, once when I was 12. We had dinner when I was 21 and lunch a few years ago. Oh and once he stopped by our house in Missouri when he wanted to persuade my 15 year old sister to have an abortion. I saw him for about 5 minutes before he was sent packing.
I feel about him like adopted kids feel about their biological parents. Indifference coupled with a certain genetic curiosity.
That is, if he's my father at all. Apparently, he is not convinced.
Ah. I had a lot more contact with my dad when I was growing up, but since then it's been much the same. In terms of contact, anyway.
Possibly unlike your dad, that seems to bother him. But, not enough for him to actually do anything about it. He is an odd and secretively conflicted duck. Hearty bluff and genial to the extreme on the outside, but I don't think anybody really knows him very well at all.
