Sometimes, Pam thinks that Karen is like Jim, just without the history of missed chances and resentment that doesn't always stay as nicely concealed as they would like. This usually occurs to her when she and Karen are plotting a way to irk Angela or are making fun of Michael, and it makes Pam feel guilty. Perhaps she is just using Karen as a substitute, a second chance masquerading as a fresh start.
(She isn't proud of this possible motivation for her relationship with Karen, but then again, she isn't proud of much. Not that she's ashamed about many of her actions; she's more ashamed about what she hasn't done.)
But then there are the things she never got to experience with Jim: the late nights and early mornings; the highs and lows of realizing you're falling in love with someone before your heart is broken; kisses that aren't meant to prove anything. And she's sure that it's better than it would've been with Jim.
(Pretty sure.)
