I'm still poring over her journal and reading the stories & essays. She's an amazing person. What the hell is wrong with this country that a brain-injured person ends up homeless because no public assistance is available for them? I'm glad to see she has a place to live now, and SSDI.
I really liked this story, about the little girl giving her lunch to the elderly homeless man:
You don't really want me to answer this question, do you? I will just say, so much for private charities and their supposed ability to do this job so much better. This issue is where the Nice Mel moderate ends and the smack people upside the head liberal begins. So I will stop here. *begins faux diplomatic silence* :-P
yeah, I read that entry last night. I was crying when I read Crystal's story on what led to her becoming homeless. It wasn't just government bureaucracy that failed her, it was her employers, doctors, school, etc. A fucking disgrace, as you say. Even if she had gone back home, there wasn't much her family could have done for her, and social service resources in a small town would be pretty scarce or non-existent.
She never mentions filing an insurance claim against the other driver. Maybe they were uninsured, or the policy limits only covered the bare minimum. Her medical bills alone must have been outrageous. :(
I would love to see her write a book and make a ton of $$$ off it.
