The pilgrims and travelers on the high road are much more pleasant in the long run than their lower counterparts. Although they tend to be a bit more awkward and burdensomely moralistic, you of all people can deal with that, and won't find yourself with regrets in a few years. For clarification, I'm not implying that you yourself are awkward; rather, you are a good enough person to be able to recognize the merits of someone despite awkwardness.
I fear I'm too vague, and my comments too trite. The only explanation I can offer is that I read an article in the Times earlier about American universities dropping their liberal arts and classics programs, which depressed me more than I'm willing to openly admit. This, in turn, left me with a desire to encourage you, even if it is in the abstract.
