Face book has become all a bit too public for me, really it was supposed to be a waste of time, enable me to stay in touch with friends and be lazy at the same time

You hit it on the button! So weird, people I thought were lost were found and for a while I was happy, but what I hadn't realised was the hidden dangers of sentiment and rose coloured glasses. Years are not always kind and people do change. What seemed to be a good thing suddenly blew up in my face with no warning, seems envy of my life has turned an old friend to hate me. At my age I do not expect such behaviour, I am too old and too tired to deal with this sort of thing and I think I will leave the main of FB to those who enjoy intrigue and gossip.
I am seriously thinking of setting up an alternative Fb for just close friends, which be about 10 people. In the mean time I will hide here and just use FB for my photo album.
Sorry to hear you have experianced the same, crap isnt it :-(
God, I am so glad its not just me!!! (although sorry to hear it) I am totally in the same boat, there is someone I should block but am worried about the repercussions. Who ever thought this could be so difficult. I am way to trusting, oh well I am learning the hard way :-(
Congrats on the Aussie plan, do you know which part yet? I really liked Adelaide ;-)
FB has its uses, but I think it has to be used with a lot more caution than I did. think even Twitter might be a good alternative.
Book, books, I am a dabbler, the Lucifer effect is a good book on people who turn bad and why. Has some interesting info on the Stamford prison experiment. Was reading a quick thing on Chomsky but lent that to my mother when i was just passing through england so need to get it back and finish it. Also started a book on a language written by woman for women (novel) Secret of the fan, but like a plum left that in England too, need to get back and reclaim some part read books that are playing on my mind! Enjoying dipping in and out of a book of Keats poetry Simon lent me and I always go back to Dorothy Parker (my comfort food) Nothing is really sticking with me at the moment. I am using a kids toy thing to knit leg warmers and arm warmers as its soooo cold, but its quite a cathartic thing to do on these cold nights.
If you're still interested in Japan, Liza Dalby's Kimono is interesting; a history of kimono through the ages. I knew nothing about Meiji Japan before I read this. For a fun fast read, George McDonald Frazer's The Pyrates: splendidly silly (and knowingly so).
I have to say the book on the Kimono sounds great!, Will have to pick up a copy when I am back in england (cheers for that) I was lucky enough to go to the Meji Shrine in Tokyo, wonderful place. I will enjoy reading this book a lot.
Will have to meet up for a drink somtime when I am back over, would love to hear all you have been up to!
One problem with Facebook seems to be that people are just not used to how careful you have to be with written material. In a way it is too good at what it does - people feel they are in a friendly place and start blathering away. Then somebody notices that everybody else has been invited to a certain wedding...somebody else refuses an invitation when it is clear they are visiting somebody they prefer...people make catty comments about exes...colleagues write personal stuff about each other...kaboom!!!!
My experience of Friendface was sufficiently unpleasant that it scared me right off. I do feel I'm missing out on social connections, but I am not prepared to expose myself to what really does seem to be a world of angst and minefields.
